The BEST Lion Sighting I’ve Ever Had!

This incredible lion sighting was filmed at Magotho Campsite in the Khwai Concession—widely considered one of the best game viewing areas for self-drivers in all of Botswana. Nestled between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, Khwai offers an unparalleled wilderness experience, and Magotho is a favorite among overlanders for its raw, unfenced proximity to nature. Waking up to lions roaring nearby or spotting them just a few meters from camp is not uncommon here, and this particular sighting was one of the most memorable from my travels.

I captured this moment during my Best of Botswana overlanding series, where I explored some of the country’s most iconic and remote wildlife destinations. If you’re a fan of African wildlife and adventure travel, I invite you to watch the full episode—and the entire series—on my channel. You’ll not only see more stunning lion encounters like this one but also get a front-row seat to the beauty of Khwai and the greater Okavango Delta.

Throughout the series, we journey through Botswana’s most legendary locations, including the mysterious Kubu Island, the predator-rich Savuti, the watery wilderness of Moremi, and the dramatic landscapes of Mashatu. Whether you’re planning your own self-drive safari or just love exploring Africa from afar, there’s plenty to enjoy and learn from these episodes. So come along for the ride—you won’t be disappointed!
