This is the first time I’ve seen so many male lions!

During my recent visit to a zoo in Japan, I witnessed something truly unexpected—the sight of several male lions together in one enclosure. It was the first time in my life I had ever seen that many male lions in one place, and the experience left a lasting impression on me.

Usually, male lions are seen alone or in pairs, often in the wild as part of a coalition or as the dominant males of a pride. But here, I saw at least five large males, all with thick, majestic manes, lounging and interacting within the same space. They looked powerful, regal, and calm, yet you could still sense the strength and tension beneath their relaxed poses.

I was fascinated by how well they seemed to get along. At one point, two of them playfully swatted at each other, while another let out a deep roar that echoed across the entire zoo. Visitors nearby were equally amazed—phones and cameras immediately came out to capture the moment.

Japanese zoos are known for their attention to animal care and creating naturalistic habitats, and this exhibit was no exception. It made me wonder about the story behind these lions—were they brothers, raised together? Were they part of a conservation program? Whatever the case, it was an unforgettable moment.

Seeing that many male lions up close reminded me of how powerful and beautiful wildlife truly is. It’s one thing to read about lions or see them on TV, but being only a few meters away from such magnificent animals was something else entirely.
